Accelerated Reader
What is Accelerated Reader? (A.R.)
Accelerated Reader is a progress monitoring software assessment in wide use by primary and secondary schools for monitoring the practice of reading.
How is Accelerated Reader used at Marcus Garvey?
At Garvey, A.R. is used to monitor student independent growth in reading. It has been proven that if students read independently for at least 25 minutes daily, vocabulary increases as well as their reading ability. A.R. is mandated to be used daily. Students are assessed via the computer when they have finished reading and journaling about the novel. Students receive points for each novel read. These points convert to grades which are then applied to the students' overall quarterly grade.
