Chapter 1 The Workshop
Describe the conditions inside the factory. How would you feel if you were forced to work in such conditions?
How do you think the master, Hussain Khan, keeps track of the debt owed by each child? Do you think this is a reasonable tracking system? Why or why not.
Chapter 2 The Arrival
What is the first impression you had of Iqbal Masih? How does that compare to the masters impression? Create a Venn Diagram to show your comparison.

Chapter 3 The Debt
Imagine you are one of the children as Iqbal talks about the debt. How would you be feeling? How desperate would you want to be to return home? How desperate would be to make contact with the sights and sounds of the outside world?
Chapter 4 The Artist
Compare and Contrast a typical day in your life to the daily routine of a child slave in the story. Reflect on your activities from dawn to dusk (include, sleeping, eating, school, walk/bus, leisure time, reading, taking care of pets/family, playing etc.) Create a chart with the following headings.

Describe Hussain’s behavior at this time. What is the reason for his behavior? Imagine if you were one of the clients or illustrious customers. Describe your behavior. What would be your expectations, concerns and or demand?
Chapter 5 The Revenge
Iqbal stood in front of his perfect artwork ”a marvelous carpet with its complicated design and blue that had never been seen before.” Why do you think he destroyed his work, cutting it from top to bottom ? What is the expression on his face? What is Hussain’s reaction? What about the other children? Would you have done that?
Imagine you are one of the foreigner’s visiting the factory from Canada. What would your reaction be if you saw child workers chained to their looms?
Chapter 6 : The Tomb
Describe the tomb. How does it affect the five senses? What vivid language does Salman use to describe his own experience in the Tomb?
Karim does not want to help Iqbal in the Tomb, yet he goes along and Helps. Why do you think he does so against his will?
Write an ACROSTIC poem about one of the characters in the story. Take some time to brainstorm (create a web) about the character first. Use the story to help you describe this person.

How has the atmosphere inside the factory changed? Has the attitude of the child slaves changed ? Use evidence form the chapter to support your response.
Salman says, “the master is stronger than us. Nobody cares about us.” Do you agree with this statement?
In the story Iqbal makes several references to kite flying. The image of kites dancing in the sky seems to be a powerful one for him. What do you think the kites symbolize? What other images can be used to symbolize this?

At the end of the last chapter, Iqbal managed to make his escape into the street. Was this a selfish act? What do you think Iqbal was trying to accomplish? Use evidence from the story to help explain your understanding.
Why do you think Hussain retreated? If you were to interview Hussain, what would you say to him? Prepare a set of questions you would ask him and possible responses.

Describe the market square. Include the sights and sounds. How would the market square appeal to our senses? Are such markets found in Canada? How does the Canadian version compare and contrast to the one in the story?

“Knowledge is power”. What do you think this statement means? How can you apply this statement to the story? How can you apply this to your daily life?

Define the word Freedom. Brainstorm a list of symbols that represent freedom. What symbols of freedom have been found in the story so far?
While reflecting on his memories, Iqbal states that although he wants to see his family members, he does not want to live their life. Explain Iqbal’s statement using evidence from the story. What do you think his next step will be?

Why do you think Iqbal would rather work for the Liberation Front than to go home to his family? How would his family react to his decision?
Chapter 13 :The Brick Factory
Describe the working conditions at the brick factory/List the steps required to produce bricks.

How does the author use foreshadowing and flashback in this chapter? Use examples from the chapter to demonstrate your understanding.

At the end of Chapter 14 Fatima felt something was wrong. As she waited for the mail delivery, she started to cry. What bad news does she receive? Why does it take so long for Maria to write this letter?
How does the author use the image of weather to conjure up this horrific scene? Why does the author describe the car used in the scene?
Maria refuses to believe that Iqbal is dead. She is convinced that he is alive. How is this possible?
